That risk is changing the conversation between growers and nursery suppliers. Questions that once focused on availability and delivery schedules increasingly extend to propagation practices and the measures used to reduce disease exposure before shipment.
Biological crown gall control methods are part of that shift. Their growing use places greater attention on how planting material is handled during its earliest stages and whether preventive measures are built into nursery production practices. Disease management is becoming a purchasing consideration rather than an issue addressed only after plants enter the field.
For orchard operators making long-term investments, the quality of nursery stock carries financial implications that extend well beyond the initial purchase.
