The Science Behind NOGALL
Modern biological crown gall control traces its origins to the pioneering work of Emeritus Professor Allen Kerr and his colleagues at Adelaide University. Their discovery of strain K84 created the world’s first commercially successful biological control solution for crown gall disease. Later developments led to strain K1026, which remains the active ingredient in NOGALL today.
“The success of Bio-Care has really been dependent on Allen’s work in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. He really paved the way,” says Bullard.

NOGALL uses Rhizobium rhizogenes strain K1026, a beneficial bacterium that colonizes plant wounds and prevents pathogenic agrobacteria from establishing infections by outcompeting disease-causing organisms at vulnerable wound sites. The result is a preventative biological control system that has remained effective through decades of commercial use.

“Successful control of crown gall depends on not just the active ingredient, but application of high viable numbers of K1026 cells to outnumber and outcompete the pathogens,” says Bullard.

In the absence of a chemical solution, the economics are equally compelling. Treatment costs typically represent only a small fraction of a plant’s eventual value, while the losses associated with crown gall can be substantial if infected stock must be discarded. Many nurseries view NOGALL as “cheap insurance” against crown gall disease. The cost of treatment is small compared with the value of protecting years of propagation work, which is why nurseries rarely question the cost of NOGALL and consider it an essential part of their nursery operations.
“Growers and nurserymen around the temperate zones of the world have a dependence on biocontrol of crown gall because if they get the disease, they have to discard the stock, which is a tremendous loss,” says Bullard.
The impact extends beyond individual nurseries. Analyses conducted with academic collaborators estimate that biological crown gall control contributes approximately AUD100 million in annual savings to Australian horticultural industries through disease prevention and reduced stock losses.
Results that Speak for Themselves
NOGALL’s longevity remains one of the strongest indicators of its effectiveness. In many regions, growers see so little crown gall that the disease is no longer top of mind.
“There is no crown gall problem in Australia and the U.S., where we sell it,” says Bullard. “It’s almost been too good. Growers are becoming apathetic about the disease because they don’t see it anymore.”
In Ecuador, Bio-Care worked with the largest rose propagator in South America to evaluate NOGALL under commercial nursery conditions. The trial compared 1,500 rose cuttings treated with NOGALL against 1,500 untreated cuttings. After several months, only three plants in the NOGALL-treated group developed crown gall symptoms compared with 58 plants in the untreated group, representing a 95 percent reduction in disease incidence. The results helped support efforts to introduce the technology into the Ecuadorian market.
Expanding Biological Control into Grapevines
While NOGALL remains Bio-Care’s flagship product, it is already focused on its next challenge.
Grapevines present a unique challenge because crown gall can be far more difficult to control than in many other crops. To address that challenge, Bio-Care has spent many years collaborating with leading scientists Emeritus Professor Tom Burr from the United States and Associate Professor Iain Searle and Dr Maarten Ryder at Adelaide University to develop new biological control approaches.
The effort has progressed to the point where Bio-Care has secured trademark registrations in Australia and the United States for GraftAID, a future biological control platform designed specifically for grapevine propagation. The opportunity is substantial. Grapevine nurseries perform hundreds of millions of grafts annually, and even small improvements in graft success rates can translate into significant economic value.
“That’s where our mission is. That’s where our expansion is,” adds Bullard.
