This article explores the current state of adult-use cannabis sales, the environmental impact of cultivation, and the innovative trends in eco-friendly packaging, with a focus on cannabis-infused edibles and beverages.Growth of the Adult-Use Cannabis MarketThe adult-use cannabis market is booming, with sales projected to reach $32.1 billion in 2024 and potentially $58 billion by 2030. This growth is fueled by cannabis legalization in 22 states and Washington D.C., creating a competitive landscape with numerous producers. However, this rapid expansion has led to challenges such as market saturation and regulatory hurdles, which impact the industry's sustainability. In Canada, the cannabis market is also experiencing significant growth, with revenue projected to reach $5.63 billion in 2024 and potentially $6.58 billion by 2029. This expansion is driven by increasing consumer acceptance and the proliferation of retail outlets nationwide. However, similar to the U.S., the Canadian market faces challenges related to regulatory compliance and market competition.Environmental Impact of Cannabis CultivationCannabis cultivation, whether indoor or outdoor, has significant environmental implications. Key areas of concern include water usage, energy consumption, pesticides and chemicals, air pollution, waste management, and land use and habitat disruption. Cannabis is a water-intensive crop, with outdoor cultivation requiring up to 22 litres of water per plant per day. This high demand can strain local water resources and affect ecosystems. Indoor cultivation is particularly energy-intensive due to the need for artificial lighting, heating, and ventilation, resulting in substantial greenhouse gas emissions. The use of pesticides and fertilizers can lead to soil and water contamination, harming local wildlife and ecosystems. Cannabis plants emit biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), which can affect indoor and outdoor air quality.
